Artist Statement

“ Action, looks, words, steps form the alphabet by which you may spell character”. - Johann Kasper Lavater

To me art is like a mystery waiting to be solved. I see an artwork as the concentration of an idea or concept into a physical entity. The idea or concept is rarely evident through just looking at a piece; it requires analysis or examination to interpret it.

My work explores text, shape, form and pattern and by using my own invented alphabet I make it a challenge for the viewer to decipher the sentences that are repetitive taken from news articles about death and murder.

The chosen medium that I work with is Photoshop, I feel that I work well with this and that I can change the structure of the text to different levels of unread ability.

With influences as diverse as Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger and Bridget Riley I find that my work has been greatly influenced by these artists who use pattern within their work and also use black and white in some of their pieces which I find intriguing, as black and white images stand out and grabs the viewers attention. These ideas have helped shape the structure of my repetitive text patterns which I aim to make on a larger scale.
